SEAL BEACH RECREATION AND PARKS C0/1/lISSION
The Seal Beach Recreation and Parks Commission met in regular session in the Council
Chambers on Tuesday, May 13, 1977. The meeting was called to order by Vice-Chairman
Payne at 7:35 p.m. and the Pledge of Allegiance was given.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes of /larch 1, 1977 l'Iere approved as written.
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS.
Mr. Jim Schmidt and Mr. Tom Thomas of the A.V.S.O. spoke of their organization's desire
to offer organized soccer in the City of Seal Beach. Discussion followed. It was
the Commission's recommendation that the Recreation Department assist the A.V.S.O. with
registration sites, publicity and practice fields. It was understood that the use of
practice fields, by the A.V.S.O. teams would not be allowed to interfere with the
practice sessions of the Recreation Department teams.
The resignation of Recreation Supervisor Sheldon Sanada was disc~ssed and it was
decided that a letter of thanks be sent to him for the dedicated service he had given
the city. It was also decided that a memorandum be sent to City Council requesting
recognition.
Mr. Robert Wingert spoke as a private citizen requesting that the Commission consider
increasing the leadership at Gum Grove Park to include year round coverage. The
Recreation Department will request a report from the Police Department on problems
in the park area.
NHJ BUSINESS
Possible uses for the 6.2 acreas of surplus Navy property adjacent to Surfside Colony
were discussed. Mr. Steve Rowe (P.O. Box 235) of the Surfside Colony Board of
Directors spoke on the issue and asked to be included when future discussion is schedulec
The Commission requested maps of the area for their next regular meeting.

It was moved, seconded and unanimously approved to adjourn the meeting at 9:45 p.m.
