HomeMy WebLinkAboutProclamation - MADDCity of gaIpjach State- of California �U10 I�JL�I�I'�UUI�gtu6Ul1 RECOGNIZING "ILLUMINATE MADD CALIFORNIA" AND SUPPORTING EFFORTS TO END IMPAIRED DRIVING WHEREAS, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has been a national leader in the fight to end drunk and drugged driving, support victims and survivors, and prevent underage drinking for more than four decades; and, WHEREAS, Illuminate MADD California is a statewide initiative launched in 2022 that honors victims and survivors of impaired driving and raises public awareness by illuminating landmarks, buildings, and homes in red each year on December 5th; and, WHEREAS, the color red is MADD's signature color and symbolizes courage, strength, and remembrance for those whose lives have been forever changed by impaired driving crashes; and, WHEREAS, according to data shared by MADD California, 1,355 people were killed in alcohol -involved crashes in California in 2023, and alcohol -impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of fatal and serious injury crashes on California roadways; and, WHEREAS, the period between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day is among the most dangerous times of the year on our roads, as holiday celebrations too often involve impaired driving that places all road users at risk; and, WHEREAS, the City of Seal Beach is committed to promoting traffic safety, enforcing impaired driving laws, and supporting victims and survivors through the efforts of the Seal Beach Police Department and its community partners; and, WHEREAS, the City of Seal Beach desires to stand in solidarity with victims, survivors, and their families by participating in Illuminate MADD California and lighting Seal Beach City Hall and the Seal Beach Police Department in red on December 5th, 2025; and, WHEREAS, residents and businesses of Seal Beach are encouraged to join this observance by lighting their homes and storefronts in red and by committing to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, the City Council of the City of Seal Beach does hereby recognize Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Illuminate MADD California campaign, supports the efforts of all MADD volunteers, honors of victims and survivors of impaired driving, and urges all residents to help keep our roads safe by always choosing to drive sober and encouraging others to do the same.
