Please see the following public comment for item E on the 01/12/26 Seal Beach City Council agenda.
The City of Long Beach appreciates the City of Seal Beach’s interest in trash capture solutions and its continued
commitment to protecting our shared coastline. As you are aware, Long Beach has been leading in this work and
is moving ahead with a significant development to capture thousands of tons of trash along the Los Angeles River,
which has the highest documented level of trash. Long Beach is aware of the regional conversations that have
taken place around Seal Beach’s effort on the San Gabriel River; however, our involvement to date with the City of
Seal Beach has been limited to receiving periodic updates rather than participating as a decision-making member
of any committee. We wanted to clarify this to ensure the public record accurately reflects our role so far, at the
early stages of this project.
That said, Long Beach recognizes that the trash impacts along the San Gabriel River and our coastline are regional
in nature and cannot be addressed by any single jurisdiction. Meaningful, long-term progress will require strong
coordination among Seal Beach, Long Beach, Los Angeles County, and other watershed partners, especially as it
relates to sites that are physically located in Long Beach’s jurisdiction as we understand is proposed by Seal
Beach in the MOU. We remain committed to continued dialogue and welcome opportunities to collaborate as this
initiative evolves. Thank you for your work and for your dedication to safeguarding our beaches and coastal
environment.
