RECOGNIZING THE HARBOUR FAMILY AND THE LEGACY OF HARBOUR
SURFBOARDS
WHEREAS, Rich Harbour started one of the most legendary surf shops in Southern
California over 60 years ago, beginning by shaping boards from scratch in 1959 after his
first board was stolen from his parents' house; and,
WHEREAS, Harbour started shaping boards out of his parents' garage before opening his
own shop, Harbour Surfboards, on Main Street in Seal Beach in 1962; and,
WHEREAS, Harbour gained fans around the world and a cult -like following among
surfboard enthusiasts, some of whom gathered over the years at Harbour Surf Days to ride
waves at Bolsa Chica State Beach and share stories about his boards, both historic and
new designs; and,
WHEREAS, the Harbour Family has continued to uphold Rich Harbour's legacy of
craftsmanship, community, and innovation in surfing; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Seal Beach recognizes and congratulates the Harbour Family for
their enduring contributions to the community's surf heritage.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, the City Council of the City of Seal Beach
does hereby recognize the Harbour Family and Harbour Surfboards for their
accomplishments and for honoring Rich Harbour's long-standing legacy in the City of Seal
Beach.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of
Seal Beach to be affixed this 12th day of January 2026.
