National Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) Awareness Day
May 15, 2026
WHEREAS, Mucopolysaccharidosis and Mucolipidosis (MPS and ML) are lysosomal storage
disorders with progressive and degenerative clinical manifestations that significantly impact
quality of life and shorten life expectancy; and.
WHEREAS, MPS and ML affects approximately 1 in 25.000 live births annually in the United
States, where MPS I and MPS II are Recommended Universal Screening Panel (RUSP)
approved and recommended by the US Secretary of Health to be screened for at birth in
each state; and,
WHEREAS, individuals and families affected by MPS and ML often experience problems
such as delays in obtaining an accurate diagnosis, difficulty finding a health care provider
with expertise in their condition, and a lack of access to treatments or ancillary services; and,
WHEREAS, residents of Seal Beach are among those affected by MPS or ML; and,
WHEREAS, the National MPS Society is organizing a nationwide observance of MPS
Awareness Day on May 15, 2026.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Lisa Landau and Members of the Seal
Beach City Council do hereby proclaim the observance of "National MPS Awareness
Day" on May 15, 2026, in the City of Seal Beach to promote greater awareness,
understanding and support for individuals and families affected by these rare and life -
impacting diseases.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I hereby affix my signature and the seal of the City of Seal
Beach on this eleventh day of May in the year two -thousand and twenty-six.
