RESOLUTION NUMBER ~
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SEAL BEACH, CALIFORNIA, AMENOING THE POSITION
CLASSIFICATION PLAN TO INCLUDE THE POSITION OF
FIRE INVESTIGATOR.
WHEREAS, the City of Seal Beach is a participant of the NET
Six Joint Powers; and
WHEREAS, the NET Six Joint Powers has received an L.E.A.A.
grant creating an Arson Control Unit; and
WHEREAS, the Arson Control Unit is seeking two qualified
investigators to provide criminal fire investigation
coverage for the cities of Huntington Beach, Fountain
Valley, Seal Beach and Westminster; and
WHEREAS, in order for the City of Seal Beach to qualify as a
participant in the Arson Control Unit it is required
that the City includes the position classification of
Fire Investigator in our Position Classification Plan;
and
WHEREAS, the Assistant City Manager/Personnel Director in
consultation with the Fire Chief has prepared a job
description for Fire Inspector which has been approved
and recommended for adoption by the Civil Service Board;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council

CLASSIFICATION STUDY
NORMAL DUTIES
FIRE INVESTIGATOR
DEFINITION
Under general direction of the Fire Chief or other designated representative,
is responsible for determining cause and origin of criminal fires. Performs
related duties as required.
This position is funded as part of the L.E.A.A. Arson Control Unit and
inclusion into the classification plan of the City of Seal Beach is subject to
availability of these funds and existence of the Arson Control Unit.
TYPICAL TASKS
A Fire Investigator is responsible for cause and origin determination which
includes but is not limited to the following: Interview of witnesses and suspects;
collection and preservation of evidence; preparation of cause reports; liaison
with law enforcement agencies, district attorney's office, the courts and other
related agencies; preparation of cases for presentation in court; present cases
in court; make custody arrests and citations and other related duties.
The Investigator will also be responsible, under the direction of the Admin-
istrative Investigator, for the planning, preparation, and presentation of the
various training programs to be provided to fire companies, Investigator I's
and law enforcement agencies.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
To meet the basic standards set forth in the National Fire Code, 1031-37
through 42, 1978 Edition.
To have a minimum of an A.A. degree in Fire Sciences or Police Sciences.

Have a minimum of three years working experience with an organized fire
protection or law enforcement agency being directly involved with investigation
work.
