HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC Res 2441 1975-06-09 I 1 I . . ~ RESOLUTION NO. .;(<1<11 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEAL BEACH, CALIFORNIA, SUPPORTING THE DEVELOPMENT OF NUCLEAR ENERGY IN CALIFORNIA. WHEREAS, A controversy now exists in California concerning the safety and environmental acceptability of nuclear-powered fuel generating plants; and WHEREAS, Normal background radiation is much greater than the low level of radiation produced by normal nuclear power plant operation; and WHEREAS, Commercial nuclear power plants have operated in the United States since 1957 without a SINGLE report of injury to a member of the public as a result of reactor operations; and WHEREAS, The 106 nuclear-powered vessels of the United States Navy have steamed over 25 million miles since 1955 without a SINGLE report of a reactor-related injury to a crewman or ci vl1ian; and WHEREAS, The societal risks of nuclear power generation have been found to be smaller than risks commonly associated with other activities carried on routinely by man; and WHEREAS, The Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) are now organized in such a manner that the public can be assured of effective regulation and development of nuclear energy and related mat- erials; and WHEREAS, New security regulations control the threat of sabotage or diversion of nuclear materials; and WHEREAS, Nuclear Power is a practical source of energy available in the quan~ity and in time to reduce substantially our depen- dence on fossil fuels and imported oil and the thereby protect the economic and physical well-being of the United States while at the same time providing the lowest cost electric gen- eration for meeting base load requirements; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Seal Beach supports the further development of nuclear energy in California; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Seal Beach supports continued expenditures for nuclear research and devel- opment to insure the maximum possible safety, reliability and efficiency of nuclear generating plants.
