A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEAL BEACH, CALIFORNIA, AMENDING THE POSITION
CLASSIFICATION PLAN TO INCLUDE THE JOB CLASSIFICATION
OF APPRENTICE FIREFIGHTER.
WHEREAS, Because of the City's desire to elevate the quality of
its fire service and improve equity of its compensation
plan, the Personnel Officer has recommended that the
job classification of Apprentice Firefighter be included
in the Position Classification Plan; and
WHEREAS, The Civil Service Board of the City of Seal Beach has
recommended the Position Classification Plan be amended
to include the position of Apprentice Firefighter.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of
Seal Beach, California, does hereby amend the Position Classification
Plan of the City to include the position of Apprentice Firefighter.

Definition
Under theceneral supervision of a Fire Officer, the Apprentice Fire FiQhter
is re~uired to efficientlv nerform duties involvino the nrotection of life
and pronertv from fires or emeroencies while assioned to' an enoine, ladder,
or rescue com[lany: r'aintains fire stations, fire annaratus, and fire
protection systems; and performs other duties as directed.
Distinouishino Features
This classification is considered as the entry level .oosition into the
Fire Service with the City. It is created in recoonition of the fact that
to attain the abilities of a full professional Fire FiQhter reouires more
traininQ and on the job exnerience than is normally reouired. Ps a condi-
tion of empl~vment, entrants are required to contractually commit the~selves
to oarticination in the Pnnrentice Fire Fiohters Prooram for the City of
Sea 1 Beach'.
T'toical Tasks
Resnonds to fire and other e~eroencv alarms and narticioates in all ooera-
tions necessary to insure the confinement and extinouishment of fires or
the eliMination of other hazardous conditions: assists in the evacuation
of endanoered persons from hazardous locales: connects and lays hose lines:
onel"ates hose nozzles and other fire extinouishino apoliances'in an effi- -
cient manner to reduce water or other damaoe: raises, lowers, and climbs
ladder: uses hand tools, makes forcible entry into builClirios: ope'ns Ut'
walls and other structures: enters burnino buildinns or other locations;

An aDPrentice must exhibit emotional maturity and must meet minil'1um entrance
standards. In addition, must oossess a valid Californ~a drivers license.
