No wire smaller than No. 12 D. & S. shall be used for said service wires. All main feeders shall be fused at the meter. Main line switches shall be placed on all service wireR, either ovar bead or underground. In a readily accessible place. as near as possible to the point where the wires enter the building, and arranged so as to cut off' the entire current. Service cut-out and switch shall be arranged so as to cut off current from all devices, Including meters. Where flush switches or receptacles are used, whether with conduit systems, or not, they must be enclosed In boxes constructed of Iron or steel In addition to the porcelain enclosure of the switch receptacle. No push-buttons for bells. gas-lighting circuits, or the ltke, shall be placed in the same wall-plato with switches controlling electric light or power wiring. Where It Is possible ,at all switch or fixture outlets not less than a 'UI-tnch block shall be fastened between the studs or fioor timbers, not flush with the back of lathing, to hold tubes and to support switches or fixtures. When this cannot be done, base blocks, not leslI than %. inch In thlclmesR, securely screwed to lathing, shall be provided for switches, and also for fixtures which are not attached to gas pipes or conduits. _ . _.:- No wires shall be of smaller size than No. U B. &: S. gauge, and mUlt be 10 Ipllced or joined as to be both mechanically and electrically secure without solder. The joints shall then be soldered to Insure preservation, iUld covered with an insulation equal to that on the conductors. They shall be separated from !Contact with walls, fioors. timbers or partitions, through which they may pass, by non-combus~ tible, non-absorptlve insulating tubes, such as glass or porcelain. They shall be kept free from contact with gas, water, or other metallic pip. ing, or any other conductors or conducting material which they may cross, by some continuous and firmly bed non-conductor, creating a permanent separation. Deviations from this rule sometimes may be allowed for good reasons, and by special permission. In wet places, the said wires shall be so placed that an air space will be left be- tween the conductors and pipes. In crossing. and the former shall be extended in such a way that they cannot come in contact with the pipe accidentally. They should be run over, rather than under. pipes upon which moisture Is likely to gather. or which, by leaking. might cause interference with such wires. . When one wire crosses another wire. the best and usual means of separating them Is by means of a porcelain tube on one of them. Tho tube should be prevented' from moving out of place. either by a cleat at eaeh end, or bv tannln2' It. securely to the wire. The same method may be adopted where wires pass close to Iron pipes, beams, etc.. or where the wires are above the pipes, as Is generally the case. ample protection frequently can be secured by supporting the wires wit.h a porcelain cleat, placed as nearly above the pipe as possible. Stranded wires shall be soldered before being fastened under clamps or binding screws, and whether stranded or' solid. when they have a conductivity greater than that of No.8 B. & S. gauge, they shall be soldered into lugs for all terminal connections. n'ie wires shall have an Insulation equal to that of the conductors they confine: but the use of some form of confining knob or insulator which w1l1 dispense with tie wires is recommended. Wires shall not be laid In plaster, cement, or similar finish, and shall in no case be fastened with staples. They must not be fished for any great distance, and only in places where the electrician can Aatlsfv himself that the 'Provisions of this ordinance have been com. plied with, Twin wires shall in no case be used, except in conduits where Oe:z:i~ ble conductors are necessary. All wires shaIl be protected on side walls from mechanical injury. When laid acroSl! 'fioor timbers In cellars, or tn rooms where they might be m:posed to Injury. they must be attached'. by their insulating"' supports. to the under side of a wooden strip, not less than three inches in width. . 'Special permission may ~ be. given in writing by the electrician, for the temporary InstaIlatlon of approved systems of decorative lighting, provided the difference of potential between the wires of any circuit shall not be over 220 volts. and also provided that no group of lamps requiring more than 1320 watts shall be dependent on one cut-out. Wooden mouldings encasing the wires. shall have. both outside and Inside. at least two coats of water proof material, or be impregnated with a moisture repellant. They must be made in two pieces, a back- ing and a capping. and shall afford suitable protection from abrasion. and be so constructed as thoroughly to encase the wire, be provided with a tongue not less than % inch In thickness between the conduct- OrA, and have exterior walls. which under grooves shall be not less than % inch in thickness, Bnd on sides not less than '" inch In thickness. AIl old work shall be constructed and Installed In the same manner as new work, except where It Is Impossible to knob; In which case, the wires shall be carried In flexible conduits, which shall extend from knob _to knob: ontr one wire ~e In tL~h condui~ _ ___ r ,- r- I '~ I. All wires shall have supports every four and one-halt feet along flat Burfaces of concealed work, and six feet on treats at least four Inches In height for open work. Exposed or cleat work shall be constructed and Installed as follows: Weather 'Droof or slow bunt wire not smaller than No. 14 B. &; S. shall be used. Where lights are exposed to the weather, weather proof sockets shall be used. and bung by weather proof wire. Only one cord shall be attached to each rosette. FIxture work shall be constructed and installed as follows: All .combination fixtures shall have Insulation joints between fixture and pipe.
