Meeting called to order at 7:A2 P.M. by Chairman Boeger.
Minutes of meeting of February 2, 1966, were approved as presented.
I.. Plan Review - Pole Sign for "Tastee-Freeze" in Seal Beach Center (PR-2-66)
Mr. Thomas Young of N.Y.E. Sign Co. presented plans for the installation of a
large pole-mounted sign for the "Tastee-Freeze" store in the Seal Beach Center.
The plans indicate a 33 foot high sign, including a lighted and rotating ice cream
cone design at the top. Mr. Paul Guava, Opal Cove Way, a resident of ~he nearby
residential area protested the installation of this type of sign and reminded the
Commission of assurances given at the 1nitiation of the Seal Beach Center that
everything would be compatible with the residential area. A great deal of
Commission discussion followed, with considerable questioning of Mr. Young.
The indication of var10US co~ission members was that the sign was not acceptable
as presented. It was moved by Dr. Kunkel and seconded by Mr. Crowley that the
matter be held over to the next regular meeting, at which time Mr. Young could
present a new sign des1gn or could bring Mr. Moss (the developer) to the meeting
to offer better explanation of need for the sign as proposed. Passed unanimously
by members present.
II. Informal discussion of new building at St. Annels Church
Mr. Don Ayres of Ayres and Fiege, Architects, presented a pre11minary sketch layout
of a proposed new building at St. Anne's Church. This would replace the present
fellowship hall which would be completely removed. The presentation was primarily
intended to gain direction from the Commission concerning acceptable layouts and
necessary variances. After considerable discussion, Mr. Ayres was advised of the
probable necessity for a variance to cover parking and rear setback requirements.
He was directed to prepare larger and more detailed drawings and to confer with the
Secretary to develop the best solution prior to final submission to the Commission.
III. Informal Discussion - Proposed high-rise apautment building at corner of
8th Street and Ocean avenue
Mr. Adam Pawlak presented sketch plans of a proposal to construction a 10 story
apartment building on his property at the corner of 8th St. and Ocean Ave. The
presentation was informal in nature, to gain understanding of the Commission's
feelings regarding such a development. There was conside~able discussion of the
matter while scanning the sketch plans. The plans were left with the Commission
and Mr. Pawlak indicated he would be contacting the Commission again in 10 days
or two weeks to find out its reactions.
