COMMUNITY PARKS
community parks are larger than neighborhood parks and are designed
to serve the needs of a broader age group. These parks often
attract people from outside the area in which they are located.
Typically these facilities contain tennis, volleyball, handball and
basketball courts, picnic areas and sports fields for seasonal
sports such as baseball and football. Community parks generally
range in size from approximately 5 to 30 acres.

Open space/Recreation/conservation
1. Add new section: Wetlands Area
An area of approximately 41.4 acres of tidal influenced wetlands
will be restored in the southwest corner of the Hellman property.
The size of the wetlands is based on a wetlands assessment and
restoration recommendation by the Department of Fish and Game in
1980 (updated in 1988) and amended by the California Coastal
Commission in January of 1990. The project should create a habitat
for a wide variety of fauna, with supporting the flora
representative of a salt water wetlands. A fuller description of
the wetlands and some of its functions is described in the amended
Hellman specific Plan.
2. Add to Community Park
An area of approximately 26 acres will be developed as a Community
Park including the Gum Grove area which would incorporate nature
trails, active and passive recreation elements into its design.
The City will also negotiate with the Hellman's on purchase of an
additional five (5) acres of property within Planning Area 4 for
development as additional park facilities.
