NEWS RELEASE
The Seal Beach Environmental Quality Control Board, as part
of its study of the Alamitos and Haynes Power Plants' fallout
emissions, received 14 letters alledging problems related to
. the power plant operations.
These letters, mostly from Leisure World, were turned over
to the South Coast Air Quality Management District for investigation.
While suggesting windblown sand and dirt were the likely sources
of complaints in 12 cases, the AQMD did state that "in the
future, if the economics dictate that the power plants burn
oil on a large scale,...a soot fallout problem...may occur."
AQMD further stated: "If a specific incident of fallout occurs
which we are able to trace to a specific source and a considerable
number of people are willing to testify in court as to the
damage caused to their health and/or property, we would be
able to issue a notice of violation and pursue litigation."
.
The Board suggests that residents quickly notify Mr. Charles
Berry (213) 532-4102, head of AQMD's Energy Section, after
a pollution incident is believed to occur. If a complaint
is, made, the Board requests that Dana Ogdon, Administrative
Aide, Dept. of Developmental Services, City of Seal Beach,
also be notified in writing so that he can inform the Board.
A copy of AQMD's letter is attached.
The Board's next scheduled meeting is March 19, 1985, at 7:30
p.m., in the City Council Chambers, 211 8th Street.
