National Beach Safety Week,
May 24 - 31, 2010
WHEREAS, the beautiful coastal and inland beaches of
Southern California represent a world renowned recreational
resource; and,
WHEREAS, Seal Beach residents and visitors alike are drawn
to these beaches by the millions each year for water and beach
activities; and,
WHEREAS, the aquatic environment has dangers that can be
effectively managed through public awareness and the
vigilance of professional lifeguards; and,
WHEREAS, for reasons of public safety, an annual reminder of
the joys and hazards associated with the aquatic environment
are appropriate at the commencement of the busy summer
beach season; and,
WHEREAS, Seal Beach residents and visitors alike must
remember to Never Swim Alone, Always Swim Near a
Lifeguard, Never Drink Alcohol Before Swimming, Respect the
Power of the Surf, and Learn to Swim;
NOW THEREFORE, LET IT BE PROCLAIMED that the City of
Seal Beach does hereby recognize May 24 -31, 2010 as:
"National Beach Safety Week"
and urge all residents using our beaches to enjoy themselves
at the beach this year, while taking appropriate measures to
protect themselves and their children.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I hereby affix my signature and the
seal of the City of Seal Beach this tenth day of May in the Year
Two Thousand Ten.

Peace Officers Memorial Week
May 9 15, 2010
WHEREAS, there are approximately 900,000 law enforcement officers
serving in communities across the United States, including 30 sworn
members of the Seal Beach Police Department; and
WHEREAS, since the first recorded death in 1792, more than 18,000 law
enforcement officers in the United States have made the ultimate
sacrifice and been killed in the line of duty, including one member of the
Seal Beach Police Department; and
WHEREAS, the names of these dedicated public servants are engraved
on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, which
was dedicated in 1991 in Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, 324 names are being added to the National Law Enforcement
Officers Memorial this spring, including 116 officers killed in 2009 and
208 officers killed in previous years; and 6 law enforcement officers were
killed in the State of California in 2009; and
WHEREAS, the service and sacrifice of all officers killed in the line of
duty will be honored, and the names of the officers newly engraved on
the Memorial will be formally dedicated, during the National Law
Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund's 22nd Annual Candlelight Vigil, on
the evening of Wednesday, May 12, 2010; and
WHEREAS, May 15th is designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day, with
federal law (P.L. 103 -322) directing that all flags be flown at half -staff on
that date in honor of fallen officers and their families;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Seal Beach City Council
formally declares May 9 -15, 2009,
"Peace Officers' Memorial Wee
and publicly salutes the service of law enforcement officers in the City of
Seal Beach and in communities across the nation.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I hereby affix my signature and the seal of the
City of Seal Beach this tenth day of May in the Year Two Thousand Ten.
