SUBJECT: ACCEPT DONATION OF 2010 GRANT FUNDING
FROM THE SEAL BEACH 5K/10K COMMITTEE
SUMMARY OF REQUEST:
That the City Council accept the donation of 2010 grant funding from the Seal
Beach 5K/1 OK Committee for the Community Services Department in the amount
of $16,870 and Seal Beach Junior Lifeguard Program in the amount of $3,100
and appropriate in the 2010 -11 annual budget.
BACKGROUND:
At the July 12, 2010 City Council meeting, the City of Seal Beach Community
Services Department was awarded $16,870 by the Seal Beach 5K/10K
Committee to purchase equipment that will help to promote and enhance
recreation programs as well as improve City facilities that are used to support
recreation activities.
All donations are awarded through an application process and reviewed by the
5K/10K Committee before being allocated to several non - profit or charitable
community organizations to provide recreation programs, services, and facilities.
Attached to this staff report as Attachment A is a list of grants awarded in 2010
for a record total of $111,000 to 32 organizations across a wide range of
community program needs. The Seal Beach 5K/10K Committee, under the
direction of Bill Ayres, is very committed to making the annual event one of high
quality and a source of pride for Seal Beach. This event hosts over 5,000
participants each year, and the Committee is a non - profit organization whose
charter is to raise funds and awareness for recreation programs, services, and
facilities in the greater Seal Beach community. The Seal Beach 5K/10K non-
profit organization has been in existence since 1999, although the organization
has sponsored runs for 36 years. The 5K/10K race has continued to grow in
attendance and contributions every year. The event is planned, managed and
executed 100% by volunteers.

In 2010 the Community Services Department received $16,870 to fund the
following projects:
• Security Cameras for the Seal Beach Tennis Center
• Locker Room enhancements for the Seal Beach Tennis Center
• Window tinting for the Marina Community Center to replace aging blinds
• Electronic access control for the Marina Community Center
• Additional benches for the Seal Beach Tennis Center
Additionally, the Seal Beach Junior Lifeguard Program received $3,100 to fund:
• Scholarships for the 2010 Summer Junior Lifeguard Program
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
By accepting the 2010 grant funding from the Seal Beach 5K/1 OK Committee, the
2010 -11 annual budget will be increased in revenues and expenditures as
follows: (Budget Amend 11- 02 -01)
Community Services Department $16,870
Marine Safety Department $ 3,100
RECOMMENDATION:
That the City Council accept the donation of 2010 grant funding from the Seal
Beach 5K/1 OK Committee for the Community Services Department in the amount
of $16,870 and Seal Beach Junior Lifeguard Program in the amount of $3,100
and appropriate in the 2010 -11 annual budget.
