Vukojevic, P.E., Director of Public Works /City Engineer SUBJECT: MONTHLY STAFF SUPPORT SERVICES FOR THE COMMUNITY GROUP SAVE OUR BEACH SUMMARY OF REQUEST: The proposed City Council action will authorize City Staff to provide support services for the monthly beach clean -up by the community group Save Our Beach formalizing existing practice by the City. BACKGROUND: Save Our Beach is a non - profit 501(C)3 corporation ID# 35- 2176382 dedicated to improving the water quality along the Southern California coastline. Save Our Beach conducts monthly beach cleaning with volunteers with a staging area at the 1 St. Beach Parking Lot. On the fourth Saturday of each month, from 12 noon to 3 p.m, volunteers collect trash along the waterline and on the beach and bring it back to City trash dumpsters at the parking lot. This practice augments the daily beach cleaning and sanitizing that is completed by the Public Works Department. Currently, Public Works Department staff is on hand to assist with trash dumping, removing large items, unlocking gates and supplying a 4x4 pickup truck. In addition, the City provides parking passes to all volunteers for the 1 St. Beach Parking Lot. This practice has been helpful in bringing water quality awareness in the community. Save Our Beach also conducts an annual River Clean-up Day in conjunction with the State's Coastal Clean-up Day in September. Over the last few years, this effort has been successful in removing large amounts of trash and debris from the river, before it makes its way to the ocean. Annually, the Public Works Department staff is also on hand to assist with trash dumping, removing large items, and with a 4x4 pickup truck to move the trash back to City dumpsters. Save Our Beach is requesting that these City Services be formalized by City Council action. Although attendance varies, typically a few hundred volunteers attend to help pick up trash on the River Clean-up Day; a great opportunity for community involvement. In addition, some of the local businesses also donate supplies and food for the volunteers. Information regarding the clean -ups and results are available at www.saveourbeach.org. Agenda Item 8 FISCAL IMPACT: Not expected to be significant. Currently, City Public Works Staff work weekends cleaning the beach and Staff resources are shifted from general beach cleaning to providing assistance to Save Our Beach. RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that City Council authorize City Staff to provide support services for the monthly beach clean -up by the community group Save Our Beach formalizing existing practice by the City.
