Crumby P.E., Director of Public Works SUBJECT: MARINA BASKETBALL COURT CONDITION UPDATE SUMMARY OF REQUEST: Receive and file update to the Basketball Court at Marina Park. BACKGROUND: At the September 13, 2010 City Council Meeting, a residential request was made to evaluate the condition of the basketball courts at Marina Park. Currently Marina Park has a 5,800 square foot asphalt basketball court. The basketball court was constructed over 30 years ago and the majority of the court has not received a large renovation since it was originally built. The condition of the Court is as follows: • Asphalt Court Surface: The asphalt surface has been slurry sealed within the past few years. Currently, the surface has minor cracking, but is structurally sound. A new surface can be applied that is tailored to outdoor basketball courts to improve the aesthetics and performance of the surface for an estimated cost of $8,000 to $10,000. Due to the proximity of the beach to Marina Park, sand will always be present on the court. Having the sand present on the court will erode this surface and reduce the life expectancy. • Basketball goals (rims): The posts, goals, and rims have been in place for approximately 5 years. The posts are in good shape and do not need to be replaced. The goals and rims are functional. The rims were replaced in July of 2010. Replacement of the goals, rims, and bracing to commercial quality could be done for a cost of $1,200 per goal or $2,400 total. • Lighting: The lighting has not been improved for more than 10 years. The present lighting does not provide adequate lighting for the courts. The lighting comes on at dusk and goes off at 9:30 pm. The park is closed at 10:00 pm. Upgrading of the lighting standards and increasing the amount Agenda Item Q Page 2 of lights to the existing poles can be accomplished for approximately $3,000 - $5,000. The total project cost for these improvements with design and construction management is likely to be approximately $25,000. Currently no funding has been budgeted for improvements to Marina Park. This project can be included in the list of projects to be considered during the next budget hearing in the spring of 2011. FINANCIAL IMPACT: None with this action. RECOMMENDATION: Receive and file this staff report regarding the condition of Marina Park Basketball Courts. SUBMITTED BY: NOTED AND APPROVED: Yazds4itsti 1 Sean P. Crumby P.E. • David N.
