Vukojevic, P.E., Director of Public Works /City Engineer SUBJECT: 8 STREET EMPLOYEE/MERCHANT PARKING LOT OVERNIGHT PARKING EXEMPTION FOR ONE DISABLED PARKING STALL SUMMARY OF REQUEST: The proposed City Council action will provide direction to Staff regarding a request to have an overnight parking exemption for the one disabled parking stall at the 8 St. Employee/Merchant Parking Lot located adjacent to Fire Station No. 44. BACKGROUND: A recent request by a local resident has initiated the installation of a disabled parking stall at the 8 Street Employee/Merchant Parking Lot located just south of Fire Station No. 44. Two stalls were removed and transformed into a van - accessible disabled parking stall. The lot is used by Fire Department Employees, City Employees and Merchants during the day and is designated as free parking during the evening hours of 5pm to lOpm. As a matter of policy, no public parking is permitted in the lot overnight (similar to the other municipal lots in the area). City Council is being requested to consider creating an exemption at the parking stall in the 8 St. parking lot for the disabled parking stall to allow overnight parking as requested by a member of the public. Currently, any person displaying a disabled person placard can use the two on- street parking spots on 8 Street overnight. Staff recommends that if the overnight parking is exempted, that a 72 -hour limit be implemented to avoid potential vehicle storage issues. Signs can be posted at the parking lot pending Council's direction on this issue. FISCAL IMPACT: There is no fiscal impact associated with this action. Should City Council direct Staff to exempt the parking stall, crews can install the associated signage as necessary within the existing budget. 0 Agenda Item t1 A RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council provide direction on the following alternatives: 1. Create an overnight parking exemption for the one disabled parking stall at the 8 St. Employee/Merchant Parking Lot; 2. Retain the existing policy for no overnight parking; 3. Request additional information. Prepared By: odgc,,.., Mark K. Vukojevic, P.E. Director of Public Works /City Engineer NO Or APPROVE Joh : Bahorski, City Manager Agenda Item
