Bahorski, City Manager FROM: Christy Teague, Senior Planner SUBJECT: Approval of Bolsa Chica Land Trust Letter of Support SUMMARY OF REQUEST: Members of the City Council have indicated an interest in officially adding the City of Seal Beach to the list of agencies and non -profit groups which support the Bolsa Chica Land Trust. BACKGROUND: The Bolsa Chica Land Trust is a non - political, non - profit organization with the mission to "acquire, restore and preserve the entire 1700 acres of the mesa, lowlands and wetlands of the Bolsa Chica." The Bolsa Chica Land Trust is working to preserve the Bolsa Chica ecosystem and to increase awareness of the role of the Bolsa Chica wetlands system in the environment. The Bolsa Chica Land Trust also seeks to educate the public of the site history, including Native Americans and the trail of artifacts found in the area. The Bolsa Chica Land Trust is part of a larger land trust movement in the United States to protect resources for the public benefit. The Bolsa Chica Land Trust has over 5,000 members. Membership information, with member rates of $10 to $50, can be found at the website: www.bolsachicalandtrust.org. The City of Seal Beach has consistently responded to environmental documents regarding development on or near the greater Bolsa Chica afea from the County of Orange, City of Huntington Beach and the California Coastal Commission. This letter of support would be a proactive step from the City of Seal Beach in support of the Bolsa 'Chica Land Trust mission to preserve the Bolsa Chica habitat in the future. Other agencies listed as supporters include: City of Huntington Beach, Amigos de Bolsa Chica, Sierra Club Angeles Chapter, Orange County Coastkeeper and the Huntington Beach Wetlands Conservancy. FISCAL IMPACT: None. This is a letter of general support, not a financial commitment.
