HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC AG PKT 2003-04-28 #A WHEREAS, the North American Brain Tumor Coalition, a network of charitable organizations dedicated to eradicating brain tumors, is sponsoring the 6th Annual Brain Tumor Action Week May 4 -10, 2003 to heighten awareness of brain tumors and to seek supporters in the fight against brain tumors; and WHEREAS, the following Southern California Brain Tumor Foundations support this fight against brain tumors and sponsor the 1st Annual Brain Tumor Awareness Fair held on May 4' 2003 at Lake Park, Huntington Beach, California with Spencer's Treasures, STAND Together in The Fight, We Can and the CHOC (Children's Hospital of Orange County) Neuroscience Institute and many more organizations involved; and WHEREAS, each year over 185,000 'or 11 out of every 100,000 Americans will be diagnosed with a primary or metastatic brain tumor and is the leading cause of cancer death for children under the age of 20 and the third leading cause of cancer death for young adults 20 -39; and WHEREAS, brain tumors are unique among all cancers in that, being located at the control center for thought, emotion and movement, they attack that part of our body that is the seat of our spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, and cognitive abilities, our sense of self, and their effects on an individual's physical and cognitive abilities can be devastating; and WHEREAS, the current standard treatments for brain tumors (surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy) are often not curative, and the treatments themselves often cause serious deficits, especially for the developing brain of a child, and WHEREAS, enhancing the quality of life of people with brain tumors requires access to quality specialty care, clinical trials, follow -up care, and rehabilitative services. Improving the outlook for adults and children with brain tumors requires research into the causes of and better treatments of brain tumors, thereby benefiting all citizens of California, the United States, and the entire world; and WHEREAS, greater public awareness of brain tumors and the threat they represent to the public health is likely to lead to accelerated medical research, and doctors and hospitals in California are actively and valiantly involved in research into the causes and treatments of brain tumors, with the State of California possessing the intellectual resources and medical facilities to become a leader in brain tumor research. NOW, THEREFORE, LET IT BE PROCLAIMED that the week of May 4 -10, 2003 be designated as Brain Tumor Awareness Week and, in conjunction with National Brain Tumor Awareness Week, all citizens are encouraged to join in witness of this observance..
